“How do I get what she's having?”
Recently I was on the facilitation team at a retreat. One morning I sat down to meditate, and within a few minutes, as usual, a huge grin spread across my face. A few minutes after that I started laughing, and I spent the rest of the hour that way, cackling and bursting with joy, trying to keep my voice and my face quiet so I wouldn't disturb the women sharing my tent.
Afterwards I apologized to my roommate for being strange. She stopped me. “Are you kidding? I was sitting there the whole time wondering, ‘how do I get what she's having?’”
I'll tell you why that moment stayed with me. If the Chana of five years ago had seen a woman laughing through an hour of meditation, she would've thought exactly the same thing: how do I get a piece of that? I have been on both sides of that question. And the distance between the two sides isn't luck, magic, or a special soul. It's a set of skills, and every one of them can be learned.
I'm often told that most people don't pray the way I do. That no one feels their ancestors surrounding them while they face a loving, benevolent endless light, or use their imagination and their emotions to nurture vivid and rich encounters with the Divine. My answer to that is: not yet.
